Monica Gonzalez
enrolled in the Youth Opportunity Program (YO)
as a 15 year old student, she considered herself
an average teenager who was underachieving in
the classroom. Shortly after enrolling in the
program, Monica became pregnant and subsequently
gave birth to her son, Steven. Needless to say,
it became difficult for Monica to juggle her parental
responsibilities with school and work. Soon thereafter,
Monica transferred to an independent study program
that allowed her to pursue her GED while at home.
During this time, Monica also had to make the
responsible decision of separating from the father
of her child after she grew tired of his abusive
behavior. She reasoned that an abusive environment
was not good for her son's well being.
Even with Monica's fortitude, she had the presence
of mind to seek guidance from willing and able
YO! staff members who could provide her with the
services that would assist her in her efforts
to grow personally and professionally. It is Monica's
belief that her case manager's patience and resourcefulness
played an integral role in helping her obtain
her GED in January of 2006. Monica is currently
pursuing an Associate Arts degree at the East
Los Angeles College.
Monica adds, "I knew all along that I wanted
to improve academically so that I can build a
better future for my son and myself. I feel that
the Youth Opportunity Movement has made a positive
effect in my life." She is also currently
employed with the Los Angeles Youth Opportunity
Movement under a special grant called the National
Emergency Grant (NEG).
