Michael Thomas likes his job. You might say his job is spinning out of control. That’s because Michael is a sign spinner. He works for Aarrow Advertising, a company that has turned outdoor advertising with portable signs into an art form. For Mike Thomas it’s become a career and a passion.
Thomas came to Aarrow through the Hire LA 18-24 Youth Employment Program’s Work Readiness Certificate, which gives young job seekers the basic skills necessary to obtain and retain entry-level employment, and pre-screening all job seekers before they interview with employers. “One of the things I really learned was follow up. After you turn in your application, it’s important to call a potential employer and let them know you are serious about wanting the job,” says Thomas who was recently promoted to the management ranks of Aarrow and heads up a team of twelve spinners. “ I hire them, train them and make sure they are doing their job.”
The background story on Michael Thomas is not unusual. He wasn’t doing well in high school and dropped out. He needed a job and training and he went to the Job Corps to get some skills and a high school diploma. Through the Job Corps he learned about the Work Readiness Certificate and Hire LA 18-24. Once he was certified, he attended a Hire LA Youth job fair and landed two jobs---Aarrow Advertising and UPS. “I had two jobs for about three months.” He saw more opportunities for advancement at Aarrow and began to work full time. Michael says the training never stops at Aarrow. “They train you to always try to do your best.”
Last summer Michael was seeking employment. This year he’s the key to helping other young people find work. “My team of spinners is about 12 people. We try to hire young people, age 15 to 25. The pay starts at $10 an hour and you can earn up to $20.” Michael’s goal is to eventually return to school and earn a college degree. At this time, however, he enjoys the creativity he’s found through his employment. “For now spinning is a great job. We always get to try new moves and techniques.”
Most importantly, Michael Thomas believes in the Community Development Department’s Hire LA 18-24 Work Readiness Certification process. Michael says, “The program works. Lots of kids want jobs, but don’t know how to get them. Follow-up was the best thing I learned!”
